There is a Freudian baroque quality that is irresistible and to me they also evoke a very 80's Dino DeLaurentis on acid feeling.

iving life in a rental apartment in New York brings a multitude of design problems and challenges. My kitchen backsplash for one - or the lack of one. There is a sliver of marble above my sink and on the other side a sliver of marble placed behind the stove. At least there is some consistency, but it leaves little to be desired. I suppose I should be grateful I was the first one to sign my lease and therefore had first pick of appliances affording me the only stainless steel fridge and stove in the building. The other suckers...I mean tenants, have a black stove and WHITE fridge! Well, after much deliberation over what sort of fun tile I could put in place I landed on Fractureme.com custom (of course!) tiles made with Polaroid images of hunky men. Hey, this gay has gotta keep it "high-class hooker." No crappy tile by the yard from Home Depot for me!

These dudes may even cause me to spend more time in the kitchen!

f you ever had the pleasure of breaking up with me then you know well what a mix-tape looks like. If I had a dime for every one of these I made when my heart broke in the 80's I'd be giving Trump a run for his money. Now, of course, I exaggerate. I also gave out mix-tapes to those who I never even dated. This was before restraining orders were en vogue. So, if I feel like taking a walk down that painful adolescent memory lane I can now start at my front door with these retro doormats from Meninos. Mix-tape doormats come in four authentic styles and there's also an iPhone slide version for modern music enthusiasts. Meninos rock inspired pillows also bring one back to the days when speakers were as big as your head. My poor head just happened to be tormented by visions of girls with feathered hair who wouldn't give me the time of day - let alone a mix-tape professing their love to me. Ah, gay youth!

hristmas in New York is magical...magically annoying. Too many people running around scrambling to buy things and I need a more open terrain to do MY last minute, typically frantic, panic driven shopping. And, the pressure was on this year being the first Xmas with the boyfriend. Luckily for me, he is less than enthused with my spending habits so I could have purchased him a roll of paper towels and he would have been thrilled. Which, of course, made me worry about what Santa might bring me this holiday season. I was praying it wasn't a donation on my behalf to the "Oust Michelle Bachman" fund. To my delight, the BF did good!!! He does pay attention and my Tourette's-like pointing at everything I want for my home paid off. In particular, these lovely little containers from Seletti (limited edition gold). I got the small size to house all the stolen Splenda - my BF assures me this is expected from Starbuck's corporate. It reminds me of Lorena Barrezueta's fine porcelain versions of classic tin containers. When freezing my ass off over the next few months I will dream about serving delicious summer barbecue on her colorful Gourmet dinnerware.

ambling feels a bit like burning money and when you earn my sort of salary it just doesn't make sense. Ok, fine! If you SHOP the way I do there's never anything left to gamble, I hated Vegas (except I do love me a good tacky Vegas decor) and what sort of parent would I be to my two precious kitties if I squandered away their cat food money at the Craps table or over a game of 21? Not a very good one. I never really got that into card games anyway. That said, I'd turn them both into house slippers for the chance to own one of these card tables from Soane. The steampunk-like legs in a variety of finishes can be paired with your fabric of choice or in hand-stitched goatskin. I love the navy Moiré version. And, hey, now that I'm settling in to a lovely relationship I need to start thinking about entertaining more at home to keep the man under a watchful eye. Bridge party anyone? I actually think a card table is quite a practical idea in a small space and I have fond memories of my grandmother's card table altho' it did take an hour to struggle with the rusted legs that nobody ever thought to oil. Course, these little English lovelies must be significant in cost given the "contact dealer" notation under pricing. I suppose this now means I shouldn't place my order of four Moser tumblers and Hermes playing cards anytime soon.

t's not what you think! While I do admire a youthful exterior this posting is not about underage boys. This is about an outdoor furniture line by PEDRALI, the makers of some wonderful and hose-down-able (made this word up) versions of a French wingback chair. Manufactured in 3 great color options, the Pasha chair and stool combo (my fav is the jet black) is what I imagine Darth Vader would have had on his Death Star terrace - sipping a dirty martini watching yet another unsuspecting planet go "boom."

oy Lichtenstein is without hesitation my reigning "King of Pop" far more than that white dude with the initials, M.J.  So, imagine my titillation as I walk into the Paula Cooper Gallery this past weekend to find some stunning examples from Roy's Entablatures series. I see many things thru the lens of interior design and immediately envisioned a wonderful headboard for my first New York client (he's actually just a good friend who is letting me treat him so). I bet I could recreate these on IKEA's Malm bed quite nicely. And, speaking of wonderful mouldings, I snapped the last little picture from my Sunday's visit to the Sewyn Theatre. Both interiors and performances were stunning.

elicious agony is the only way to describe my experience this weekend and my trip to the newly opened
Ladurée on Madison Avenue. One of my favorite excursions in Paris has come to the UES. Same lovely interiors, same colorful macaroons on display and the same long-ass lines. But well worth every second. What's the agony you ask? The fact that I'm on a strict diet starting this very instant! I will limit myself to one macaroon a day. Impossible? Time will tell.
And every trip to this macaroon heaven reignites my passion for Jasperware. Something about the creme medallions and various hand-painted accents on the walls & ceilings against that lovely shade of muted green is soooooo yummy and happens to be my favorite color combo of the Wedgewood classic. And French is never more French than pastels with accents of black. Je Meurs!

roclaiming that I hate Mondays seems redundant. My mood on this day, the day after a lovely weekend no less, is just what it always has been. Try to change this mood and you risk decapitation (or at least a snarky comment). Is there nothing that can lift my spirits? Why, yes!!! The remedy: Marsotto Edizioni. Showcased at the 2011 Salone Mobile this italian company produces the most uplifting designs that one could imagine and all done in marble. White Carrara marble. Minimalism and extreme simplicity matched with precision to craft are what makes these pieces so equisite. Still, even a few of them evoke a very industrial feel to me. Monday blues gone!

Tuft Love

lease don't ask me to explain my various and sundry obsessions. For, some of them have just been an evolution of my taste level and make no real sense. And, the more I am introduced to quality designs, the higher that bar is raised. Case in point - tufting. I adore it. I want it. I covet it. I want to lie naked on it so as to leave a pattern of tufting all over my body. Yes, I realize this is crazy and someday I will end up in a padded (and hopefully tufted) cell. And yet, it's not so absurd to have such feelings I think. Especially when this technique is applied with a level of perfection as is in this sofa by Italian designers Alessandro Castello and Maria Antonietta Lagravinese of Castello Lagravinese Studio. Many of their designs marry the art of tailoring with the sensuality of draping. I love how modern and crisp these looks can achieve and yet feel so causal and comfortable. Adding in some architectural elements like nail-heads lend a more masculine touch to another of their designs I love. I'm also completely bonkers for the birdcage-like low slipper chair - in gilded gold no less. I will happily succumb to the men in the white coats as long as I know these pieces will be waiting for me once I get to the asylum. Hopefully, that nasty Nurse Ratched will have retired.

eems many designers are hip to the chevron pattern of late. And, while I love a good trend, this one is becoming somewhat too obvious for my taste. So, I send my energy out to the universe to put an end to my visual boredom and before long the Gods answer these prayers and present me with another classic re-envisioned in a modern way - HERRINGBONE (sister of sorts to the chevron). Longtime fan of Czech crystal, the company Artel has created a variety of colored glassware and barware. My favorite, of course, being the Herringbone tumblers (in Aqua and Olive, please). I don't drink and these are quite expensive for glassware, but I venture to think you could buy just one and be in possession of a beautiful vase. With my birthday looming in the near future readers of this blog should take special note. Cheers!

re you cock generous? Then you would identify with the character of Joe Gideon in Bob Fosse's masterpiece, All That Jazz. I had the pleasure of finally seeing this film on the big screen last night as part of IFC's Queer/Art/Film Summer 2011 line-up. I admit some of the musical numbers were not my cup of tea and the constant smoking made me want to light up every 5 minutes alongside Joe, but I was totally enthralled with the set design and interior shots. It was so New York, so late 70's, so stylized and so ME! Now, I don't endorse anyone walking around dressed like a Judith Leiber bag (enough sequins!) but I'm now determined for my next apartment to be a loft. I was loving the juxtaposition of the modern furniture elements all mixed in with the industrial lighting and antique rugs. And the set design of the stage numbers with the large, bright lights were just so over the top and wonderful. I was reminded of the floor lamp that Tom Dixon designed. Like stacked disco balls. Tom is one of those designers who creates the kind of pieces that everyone needs to have in their space. I'm not generous with my cock, but I would be very generous with my Dixon.

etish for wallpaper. Check. Propensity to go gaga over everything 70's-funky. Check. Urge to do cartwheels over Flavor Paper's new line of digital wallpaper. Check, check. I've always been magnetically drawn to murals - wallpaper or otherwise. I think my first memories of a mural wallpaper was some funky ones in my childhood dentist's office. They had scenes of islands and dolphins. Very weird, but distracting so I suppose they served their purpose. The Rogue Beauty ocean-wave and the Boone Speed designs currently showcased on the new FP website are totes boho-chic and in line with my current surfer obsession. An obsession born after spending a few days in Virginia Beach in close vicinity of a gaggle of 16 year old surfer boys with bodies that make me want to slit my wrists. I weep for my lost youth! Er, anyhooooo, I also love the Rex Ray designed papers. Super fun, colorful and quirky x 10. I'm thinking of splurging on the Bucote design for my kitchen backsplash. Certainly one roll wouldn't break my bank....or would it?

Outside and Proud

ehold, the Lanai! A fancy and tropical-like way of saying porch. It also happens to be the location of some of the most hilarious scenes from the Golden Girls. I always hated the terra cotta flooring, but saw great potential for the wrought iron patio furniture - altho' not horrific in their original incarnations during the run of the show (I prefer the button tufted version.) Recently, I came across some lounge chairs quite similar to the ones from the GGs, but opted not to pay the $400 seeing as how I'd have to strip off years of rust and totally refurbish them - giving me little time to devote to several yet-to-be-finished projects. Instead, I restrict myself to fantasies of owning NEW versions of these classic pieces. McKinnon and Harris, a company based in Richmond, VA are serving up outdoor chic in ways that could make a city-boy like me want to spend as much time in the backyard as possible. Mostly made from iron, these delightful additions to the outdoor experience evoke classic detailing and still feel totally modern to me. The Benedict Arm Chair is Preppy meets Goth at its finest!!! I'm recently a sucker for prints and could imagine cushions in a baroque Thomas Paul for Duralee fabric. And the color turquoise against a garden of green grass makes me happier than a Golden Girl marathon. Not that I need a marathon. I own all episodes on DVD and play them on repeat 24/7.

That said, I have an affinity for all things melamine. I don't know why this is except if I think back I do recall making a custom plate in grade school that I was quite proud of and coveted. Given the properties of this particular form of resin maybe my beloved dinnerware still exists somewhere out there? I'm sure many of my leanings towards the crafts of the 70's are just due to being a child of that era. Modern versions of melamine are becoming rampant and I've spotted their updated incarnations everywhere from Jonathan Adler to Target. These versions from the company Whitbread Wilkinson take my pal "Mel" to a sophisticated level and are embellished with portraits from the collection at The National Gallery. This is exactly the kind of snobbery I'd love to take to my next picnic in the park.

Dirty Pillows

arrie's evil mother (that crazy bitch from the Sissy Spacek movie) would have held a week long prayer-pollooza in that creepy closet if she had laid eyes on these "dirty pillows." In actuality they are pillows traditionally embroidered w/ music lyrics by Subversive Stitch and a bit risque. But, my irreverent ass LOVES them and I can never pass up a company that offers customization. Personally, when it comes to nasty songwriting skillz I'm more of a Lil Kim fan so perhaps an extra filthy line from her first album would adorn my pillow. She refers to p***y about 300 times per song so maybe a little sachet for my kittens to sleep on would be fly? Sorry, I'm gettin' all granny-gangsta already. Werd!

Finding Nemo

nimated films are a guilty (and to some, annoying) pleasure of mine. In truth, I watch one almost every night. Pixar, in my opinion, produce the best of this genre. This posting really has little to do with animation except that one of my favorite animated features, Finding Nemo, shares a name with a chair design by Italian company Driade. There is a bit of a nod to Jaume Plensa me thinks and I hesitate to mention that there is a similarity to a mime face (as even displayed in their own advertising! ICK). Despite the latter, I still really love them. Too large perhaps for a desk chair, I'm envisioning it as a modern, funky and surreal solution to a traditional Wingback chair. The 2011 Nemo version is in a deep blue color that invites me to dream of owning a indoor pool. You know, Hermes towels swept over the back mimicking an 80's side swept bang. Oh how different the Hearst Castle pools would have been decorated and adorned had I been in charge!

However, the REAL tragedy of last Friday was that I had to sit thru/waste an hour of my life listening to Mr. Ian Ricky Gordon's production of the greek love tragedy of O&E. I found myself wanting to scream at the male lead, "Turn around!!!" Let's just say it was not my cup of tea. There is one thing I did enjoy, aside from the company of my handsome date, and that was the program design. Very simple, modern and humorously tied in the iconic image of the New York coffee cup - you know, the one with greek designs adorning the outer facade. I'm a sucker for anything with a Greek key motif, to be sure. Which suddenly jolted my memory of a favorite little accessories company I've not blogged about. A lovely e-shop called "Greece is for Lovers". I lust after the Hermaphrodite candles and would strike a deal with Hades for the Zeus! lighting bolt letter opener. Silver plated, please.

Gettin' Jiti Wit It

here's nothing like a nicely made up bed. Well, maybe a hot guy IN the bed, but I digress. My obsession du jour happens to be sheets and pillows...really, ALL bedding has me nutso at the present. Clarification: the mundane run-of-the-mill Bed Bath & Beyond bedding department has me sleeping. BORING! What I'm talking about is the kind of bedding that gives you "wet dreams." The Jiti Bedding 2010 Collection has some of the most sheet-staining examples of the simple modern aesthetic I love. There's a touch of Japanese perspective yet it doesn't evoke the "Zen" that has been played out to the max over the years. I cringe nowadays whenever someone even mentions the word. Save that shit for the Yoga studio, people. Regardless, I'm expecting some insomnia to ensue related to waiting for what Jiti comes up with for their 2011 collections.

heer heaven. Actually, these pillows by Tempo Luxury Home are more like "shear" heaven. I have never seen printed shearling and I'm totally beside myself over these designs. Reminiscent of the carpets sold by the side of the road in certain spots of my home town back in the 80's (what the hell was that, anyway) these cats are just too Afro-chic! They have a certain YSL quality to them and I sense he would have been quite comfortable laying upon a pile of them back in his kaftan-wearing days. They are a fun and fresh take on "animal print" he would have definitely gotten off on - figuratively speaking of course. Me, just the thought of them resting on my bed have me feeling funny "down there". Meow!

eth Neuhaus should just consider herself my new "dealer."  Dealer of design inspiration, that is!  I recently had the pleasure of picking her brain and getting all giddy with her over our views on interior design.  For those of you who don't know, she is the creator and founder of Interior Connector, a website focused on resourcing and showcasing great designers of home furnishings and accessories. There are even interviews and articles by the designers themselves, giving the browser some insight and background into each company. What I love most about the site and Beth's philosophy is that she loves a mix of periods.  It isn't just one aesthetic and the platform is more "curated" than some other sites that just open their doors to anyone.  This has created a really great place to go for impeccable items with a high level of style. Prices aren't TOO bad either. And, Beth and I both agree that for a room to come together it is important to invest in quality and find those special pieces. It's even possible, once creating your own account, to move key items you love into folders for referencing later. LOVE IT!   I have nothing against stores like West Elm and Pottery Barn, but one should limit these purchases or you'll end up with a trendy showroom and not a home with individual style.  As YSL once said, "Fashions fade, style is eternal."  I love that.  And I'm loving Interior Connector.

n my never ending quest to give myself a interior design induced heart attack I periodically peruse the Hermes website.  I'm long lusted after their Avalon blanket, but alas lack the $2000 necessary to own one.  And, after a while these blankies have become too predictable in (gay) design so I've given up that dream - at least until they become "retro" and chic again.  And, just as I was becoming a bit weary of my sporadic jaunts to Hermes.com they throw in a collection of bedding!  Fuck me!!!  The dark brown Op'H bedsheets would go oh-so-lovely with my dark brown walls of my bedroom and for something that sports a "logo" these do not have that ghetto-fabulous quality that I hate.  Again, not even close to my price-range, but maybe I could swing a set of pillowcases.  If I have to cry myself to sleep over my lack of funds for these luxury items I might as well be allowed to do it in STYLE.

Divine Intervention

od is in the details, as they say.  And Matthew Fairbanks is a GOD!  As furniture designers go, His attention to details would turn even this anal Virgo (me!) into a slob - if only to keep the drawers of these pieces open so as to share their inner beauty as well as their outer perfection.  The "Michelangelo" marble slab kitchen table (my fav) is so very Tom Ford (another God) masculine, yet exquisitely beautiful.  It could easily double as a desk - for small New York spaces often require such multi-tasking and functional furniture.  And the white lacquer side console is a great alternative to a bulky credenza.  Check out how beautiful the inside of the drawers are, no?! Add a custom-sewn, perfectly-fit lining of some fabulous felt fabric to protect the wood and I'm in HEAVEN! I see a Lincoln green felt.  And green is the color of ENVY...and also a sin. One of them 7 deadly kind, dig? Amen.  

F.E.A.R. (Future Events Appearing Real)

ell, if these designs from Michael Anastassiades are predictions of what the future holds in store for design, get me to the Delorian NOW! No fear of futuristic design here. I am loving the gold ceiling bulb and neon tubing is so Blade Runner industrial chic. I'm also quite happy to see a neon tube adorning a shelf - I myself had the same idea for above my clothing bar in my bedroom, although mine is a marriage of a West Elm shelf and a green neon light bought at The Future Perfect in Williamsburg (karmically close to my apartment, I might add!). The linear chandelier my Anastassiades is super beautiful and reminds me of the lighting hanging in the Picasso Museum in Paris. All I'm left with after viewing M's site is the fear I will never be able to afford and OWN one of his pieces.

Ooh La Laa is RIGHT!

tanding in front of a wall of paint chips is like looking into a sea of infinite possibilities - and also a bit like being stoned.  I feel mesmerized and happy.  I just love seeing so many colors next to each other, working together in harmony.  I admit sometimes I even giggle.  Marry this with the look of Pantone and slap it on some fabric and I can hardly contain the drool!  The new line of furniture from Italian design gladiators, Ooh La Laa & Co. are amazingly cheerful.  I'm not a huge fan of the blond wood, mind you.  But hey, that can be painted a crisp, gloss white in no time.  

A Random Obsession

ou can't go wrong spending an afternoon in Home Depot and I often find myself just stopping in to gain inspiration from all the gadgetry and tools.  I can spend hours in front of the paint chips alone.  That being said, there are items all over the joint that just make me gag.  Case in point, some of the hideous options in the lighting department.  I mean, WHY do landlords always opt for the "nipple" ceiling fixtures with the brass trim.  No! No! Nooooooo!!!!  Luckily, my landlords chose something a tad less hideous for my living room and bedroom, but these too lack any real style.  Enter my latest dream chandies: the "Random" lighting by designer Miranda Watkins!  I adore simple yet chic uses of otherwise inexpensive and readily available materials.  These simple wind-chime-esque pendants made from plexi are fantastic and could find a new home in my 80's inspired living room once my long awaited tax return arrives.

ot to get all Black Swan on your asses, but I just stumbled upon the website of a self-proclaimed "Super Dave" at superdave.se and what David Taylor does is simply perfection!!!  I am in absolute LOVE with his candlesticks, but the oil "candles" are beyond breathtaking.  The emotions I feel right now are probably similar to what Natalie Portman's character felt when she was on ecstasy.  I need a cold shower....excuse me.

egarding indoor lighting, my strong preference, when applicable, has always been candlelight.  It's flattering, mysterious and romantic.  Of course, the most romantic of all cities is Paris.  As a self-proclaimed Francophile, I feel the perfect marriage of these two beliefs I carry have been realized in the form of these "Bustes de Cire" by the French royalty of candle-makers, Cire Trudon.  Problem is, they are so wonderful I'd hate to light them!

hat butch lesbian Miss Rosie aint got nuthin' on the latest collection by Phillip-Jeffries Ltd.  I'm addicted, in the best way possible, to the new line aptly named "Rivets".  So masculine and hard, but the underlying texture seems to lend a Japanese-like simplicity and calmness.  I love the grid patterns the rivets create and I could easily imagine this in my bathroom above the chair rail height tile.  It would extend the "tile" look all the way to the ceiling.  And perhaps make ME seem a bit more butch. No? Yeah, you're probably right.    

Fossil Fantasy

or whatever reason, and don't try to analyze it, I am recently drawn to natural elements.  Course, it all has to have that ULTRA modern, sleek, slick edge to it in order to send those shivers up and down my bony spine.  This side table certainly helps get my rocks off on that level.  I mean, caveman chicness to the max.  Those monkeys from 2001 Space Odyssey had the same reaction to that modern black obelisk so I'm pretty sure I'm having the correct reaction regardless of evolution. I'd love to evolve this amazing table by Matthew Studios right next to my bed.

ou would be hard pressed to find the activity I hated most out of all my experiences as a young lad than the time I was forced to go camping in the mountains of Santa Cruz.  The dirt, the lack of running water, bugs and the paranoid fear that Michael Myers was going to leap out at me any moment all conspired to turn me into the eternal "city boy" I am today.   Now, I enjoy nature and all it's beauty, but only in controlled environments.  What's more controlled than Lucite!?  And what could be more beautiful to said self-proclaimed city boy than these "petrified" stools by Bleu Nature.  I've said it a million times and I'll say it again - French just do it better.

aude re-runs have become a staple in my household and the image of Maude and Walter Findlay on barstools a familiar image.  The catchy theme song has been thoroughly ingrained in the DNA of both my cats, to be sure.  Not only is the humor incredibly dry and politically (for the time) charged, I'm constantly delighted by the fashion and interiors.   I can imagine the dwelling to be the birthplace of Jonathan Adler.  The mixing of traditional furniture, wild wallpaper prints and shag rugs somehow all works.  Or perhaps that's my twisted mind at work.  Do the actors even notice given the complexities of their outfits?  In the end, I don't care and draw a lot of inspiration from the eclectic set design and color combos that never cease to astonish.  Here's my interpretation of a modern spin on this unique design point of view.  

As all the family "discussions" (mostly arguments) centered around the bar in the living room, I take my first journey into 70's decor with this lovely Chinoiserie bar from Penny Long Antiques via 1stdibs.com A dark shag rug from Marc Phillips underneath gives the area the quintessential disco vibe upon which two "wonton" inspired bar stools showcased on the CSN site Allbarstools rest. As a backdrop, some vintage wallpaper courtesy of 5dm. The drink of choice for the Findlay's were Martinis, but they drank them in small glasses. Moser makes some very retro looking, high-society gems in a lovely rose color. Add liquor and EVERYTHING will look rosey!

admit I have a dark side to my design aesthetic and happen to love absurd details relating to addiction incorporated into my home.  I'm absolutely jonesing, and have been, for Jonathan Adler's vices canisters.  I'm eagerly awaiting the newest additions to the collection - the one with Viagra inscribed is my favorite for no particular or personal reason. Ahem.  Anyhooo....leaning on the morbid side of dark would be this elaborate chandelier made of syringes by artist, Andy Diaz Hope.  Beautiful in it's own right, but not necessarily something I want adorning my living room.  So, as I save up for my JA canisters, I'll settle for some cute (and quite inexpensive for the impact) coasters with pills on them from Fishs Eddy scattered about surfaces.  Very Valley of the Dolls, no?  And I'll be awaiting with MUCH anticipation the arrival of my new needlepoint kit.  I have been laboring over which image to choose and finally landed on a Madge picture circa 1980-when?   Clearly, pre-Kabbalah & the health conscious Madonna we know and love today, but the incarnation to which I am most drawn.

very so often I take a moment to remember to feel grateful I have my Tia Lonna in my life.  She is my Godmother and FAVORITE aunt.  She endured breast cancer and survived!  Her strength is a constant driving force that helps me in countless ways.  So, this post is in honor of her courage and grace.

Which brings us to the color PINK, patron saint and official color of Breast Cancer Awareness.  Happens to be one of my favorite colors and one that I'd utilize more in my fashion and home decor if I were a girl, that's for sure.  Alas, I am only able to use it sparingly but I do and that's the point.  Le Grand Trainon - one-time home to the French Royal family - is one of my all-time-make me faint uses of the color pink in architecture.  All that glorious pink marble!!!  Decadence beyond belief - tho' this is the type of attitude where gross displays of wealth and entitlement caused a few heads to roll. Ouch.  Still, I'm glad this beautiful structure exists.

pecial.  That was the make of Buick I owned and my only source of transportation during my dreaded high school years.  And, it was anything BUT special.  Somehow, from 1967 to 1987 it had acquired a patina which rivaled even the best Richard Serra sculpture.  I hated it! And I subsequently hated the color and texture of rust.  Until now.  These lighting fixtures by Mammalampa have restored my faith in the beautiful process of corrosion.  

Note: I eventually painted my car white and checkered it using black Contact paper squares painstakingly stuck to the body.

orgeous!  That's what I'd like to think when I view my windows.  This is not the case and seriously, if I have to stare at my ugly wooden "came-with-the-apartment" blinds for one more month I don't know what I'll do!  I can't afford to sew up something stupendous with the lovely Sarah Morris Maharam fabric I've been coveting since I first saw it, so I've been brainstorming as to what "cheap" solution I can come up with, yet will still add a chic touch tothe room without looking too homemade (ick!).  On my usual Monday morning strolls thru fashion on Style.com I stumbled across the Dior Fall 2010 Couture collection.  Some of the skirts, well, blew MY skirt up - so to speak.  I love the way the deep ink blue of this dress bleeds into the crisp white.  What a WONDERFUL idea for curtains.  I'd do the bleeding more at the bottom of each panel, but what an impact.  Plain silk curtains and a little dye and I'm visually appeased for the duration of yet another year on my lease!  You really never know where inspiration will strike.

othing would irritate my boyfriend more than for me to endeavor to take on yet another creative project.  As it stands, I have about 4 in the works and not enough time to devote to any of them at the moment.  But, try telling this rationale to the ever churning creative wheels of my mind!  Thus, bringing me to my latest "want du jour": a custom needlepoint pillow.  In order for me to turn this one into a reality also involves needlepoint lessons.  Nevertheless!  I want it and need it.  I was inspired by the Jonathan Adler Disco Lady pillow.  Not sophisticated enough for my living room, but definitely headed in the right direction.  His pillow evokes a certain Liza quality so I went on the hunt for an image of Ms. Minnelli circa her Studio 54 days.  I decided the raw images of her from her sessions with Warhol - shot with a Polaroid camera - were just perfect.  They translate very well into the traditional medium of needlepoint and for about the same price as an Adler.  Check out the wonderful site Needlepaint.com.  Course, the hours and hours it will take me to complete will only make the finished product that much more enjoyable.  Remind me to tell you about my "latch hook porn" I made.  That's a whole 'nuther story.

orcelain tchotchkes aren't exactly what one thinks of when thinking modernity. Or so I thought. I have always been an admirer of skilled workmanship and old-world details and Nymphenburg certainly has some mad skillZ! They often partnership with designers of all sensibilities. I was drawn to the Capitano Spavento figurine from their Couture line, birthed out of a collaboration with fashion designer Gareth Pugh. It embodies just enough of the funky, punky attitude I love. Reminds me of the Grace Jones erotic dance scene from her cult(ish) hit(ish) vampire movie - aptly named VAMP. She's painted head to toe in Keith Haring black and white makeup. I want this "Nymph" piece for my mantle - which could get very crowded, very soon!

bsolutely forever!  That's how long it takes to come across a vintage patio chair to match my Eames era vinyl laced lounge chair.  But, my persistence has paid off.  I found two cute little bucket chairs.  Sure, they are in need of a little lovin' touch, but thanks to a site that sells vinyl cording (for $150 - yikes!) I have all the confidence in the world these will look as wonderful as they did in the 60's.  I'll spray the metal body white and then decide on a color for the lacing.  I have been eyeing the Jonathan Adler "Kaliedoscope" pillows.  A pair of the small size propped on each chair would look amazingly adorable.

uturistic design never looked so retro!  I'm ever seeking kitch and these plates by Beat Up Creations via their Etsy store just have me rocketing into orbital bliss.  Not only do I have an oddly nostalgic obsession with the original Star Wars trilogy, but in many ways an equally twisted gravitation to anything reminiscent of Little House on the Prarie.  The marriage of which seems to be captured in these quaint dishes.  I'll HAVE to find a spot for them somewhere immediately!

illiamsburg is about to add another tattoo to its village.  And a bit more graffiti.  I'm grabbing my paint brushes and heading to the backyard to create this mural.  I'm super excited about this project as I haven't done anything with size in a LONG time (mind out of the gutter, people!).  My landlords have even agreed to pay for the paint!!!

I'm not sure I'll be donning the jean shorts and straw hat like Tom Sawyer, but welcome any cute young 'burg boys to stop by to check in on the progress.  Jean shorts, however, on the aforementioned are definitely encouraged.  The 70's vintage lawn chairs coming via Ebay will be a fun touch, n'est pas?

ookies and fortune-telling.  Both bring exciting prospects to mind.  I can already foresee the dinner party being held in my backyard where I can utilize these custom fortune cookies by Etsy's "YogaGoat".  A bit pricey at $10 for place-cards, but what an adorable and chic touch that allows each guest to go home with a keepsake.  I think I'll do it for a choice group of my closest pals!  After all, my blessings in the friend department haven't gone unnoticed.  Talk about good fortune!!!

s is true of most every New Yorker I know, I struggle with storage space in my tiny apartment. I've gotten more minimalist in my aesthetic as a result and have become to think "everything needs its own place". Thus, I tend to like to organize in drawers in ways I never thought possible. The challenge being, adding more drawers to my environment. My solution will be to buy a cheapo, Hollywood Regency chest of drawers on Craigslist and transform it into a beautiful haven for all my various bits of junk. I've located a company that will spray in any color Benjamin Moore has to offer. I'll post updates of the project as it unfolds. My inspiration pics are shown above.

ll I've been able to do since laying my eyes on the wonderfully kitschy, yet OH SO CHIC, sticker "wallpaper" murals by Payon Turner is trying to figure out how I can have her do one for my hallway without my landlord killing me. I might just have to throw caution to the wind and do it anyway. There's something absolutely Baroque with just the right amount of Americana playfulness I find irresistible about Turner's work. I mean, some things just haven't been done before and when they DO happen it reaffirms my belief in the creative process and I remember why I am creative myself.

I'm not one for having much cluttering my own desk top, but these are so chic in their simplicity and very modern that I am contemplating getting a set for myself. How wonderful my life would be to have these sitting atop the Craig Van Den Brulle lucite and glass desk! That wasn't really a question. If I ever do get my hands on it, you can rest assured Johnson & Johnson stock will go thru the roof from all the Windex I'll need to use to keep things pristine!

raipsing around the city with all this snow falling I find myself day-dreaming of Summer weather and a tan body - not necessarily my own, mind you. I sure hope my landlord plans to re-seed our grass in the backyard as Winter (and perhaps my neighbor's dogs) have taken it's toll. But, soon enough I will be sitting al Fresco on warm nights and think I could only do this with any kind of style in one of these crazy cute and nostalgically-appropriate-for-me, being a child of the 70's, lawn chairs. A new take on the classic nylon-mesh banded folding chairs, this version by Plodes Studio remains upscale in it's leather and polished tubing incarnation. I wouldn't take to this chair necessarily during the hottest times of the day, however. Owie!

ehold!  The final plan for my new, 80's Preppy-inspired bathroom.  I've already framed the artwork (Warhol's Farrah poloroid and a print by artist, Alyssa Monks)  and amassed the Jonathan Adler lime-green lacquer accessories.  The vintage Burberry-esque wallpaper is next on the list of purchases and as it's custom printed arriving all the way from England, I will have plenty of time to get the Lacoste bath towels, in pink of course, embroidered with my trademark "gay" monogram.  I'll really have to save up for the fabric I want for the shower curtain.  At $200/yd. I may be forced to find a cheaper alternative.  But, I don't WANT a cheaper alternative!!!

nder normal circumstances I would shy away from bold animal prints.  Can tend to be more tacky Vegas or ultra-Gay than anything you'd think was chic.  And then I logged on to the Carini Carpets website and became a convert.  The pop colors of their tiger printed rugs are just so incredibly sophisticated and possess a bit of Warhol influence.  Nothing UN-chic about them!

uch to my delight my new Flor tiles look wonderful in my living room.  Course, now that I know these Flor tiles are actually as cool as they look on their website and in practical applications, I'm inspired to do some color blocking designs with them for a bold impact.  I'm reminded of Joseph Albers and think it could be a wonderful way to ground a table in the middle of a room or even off center for those rooms with quirky proportions.  I will use my friend Kate's living room as a test run for this brainstorm, but I have no doubt it will be a success.

rtist Berry Phillipe reminds me of a French Jeff Koons. Course, I love anything shiny and Berry's "Splash"sculptures are just too irresistible. My favorite version would be the red as it also reminds me of blood and you know I'm always down for a theme in my decorating point of view. Must be done tastefully, of course, and remember, a little theme goes a long way. However, a morbid subject matter done impeccably could be devilishly fantastic. Thus, I'd slap up the "Red Splash" on the wall and perhaps I'd add a few "Forensic" embroidered pillows by Lost City Products and leave it at that.

On display are the most wickedly fun and somewhat morbid dining chairs with images of the 6 wives of Henry VIII!  Impeccably done and embellished a la "The Bedazzler" one would be hard pressed to find a chair for the "head" of the table.  Sorry, couldn't resist.

On one of my walls in my living room, in the oddest spot imaginable, there is placed a fuse box.  I long for the days when architects put these devices where they belong...in a closet!  Regardless, I will eventually get a leaning full-length mirror to cover this particular eye-sore.  In my dream of dreams I'd buy the DIVA standing mirror by Jean-Marie Massaud.  How stunning is the red tassel detail that turns on the light in back?  The upper and lower parts are smoked while the center section has a special mirroring effect.  This is, of course, just the 70's inspired vibe I live for!!!

I inherited my love of Wedgwood China from my mother, although I don't remember if she even owned any Jasperware (my fav) come to think of it. Doesn't' matter. I think it's the Greek Revival inspired designs that always seem to catch my fancy. And perhaps it was the almost cartoon-like quality of the reliefs that appealed to me as a kid. Nowadays, I just find them beautifully kitsch. Here are some recent favorites I found from the Wedgwood site. I'd love to fill the black one with pink and maroon peonies!!!

Now that my living room is painted a lovely gray, my window treatments (and I use that term loosely!) are just not cutting it and I'm in need of some curtains ASAP. Course, I don't want something too traditional and it's in my DNA to add some fun and kooky details here and there. What I've come up with is taking some basic Chrome curtain rods from West Elm and dressing up the ends with these wonderful white studded cuffs by Eddie Borgo utilized as punk-inspired finials. I think they would look especially chic, and still a bit naughty, paired with the Maharam "Geometri Sphere" by Verner Panton. If I wanted to be totally over the top - and had the pocket book to execute - I'd add some of Eddie's chain mail and studded necklaces as tie-backs.

Leather sofas would be my anti-addiction if I were to be honest here. That being stated, I can't help but lust, and I mean LUST, over this love seat by Duane Modern. Mostly because I absolutely DO possess a strong attraction to patent leather - not limited to furniture, mind you. Especially when done up in a classic and chic color such as white with contrasting black piping. I imagine this set back against a window to replace the obvious choice of a window seat. I'd prop a Vivienne Westwood pillow on it to add some wonderful Pop Art punch. Yummy!

My faux-fireplace, while very pretty and it definitely adds to the charm of my apartment, is a pet peeve of mine in that it is NOT a working fireplace. However, I plan to mount a flat screen tv where the logs should be and hopefully find some fantastic screen to cover it when not in use. I may even buy one of those silly "fire" DVD's to foster the illusion that it is a functional fireplace. I would also like to create a mini hearth to hide away my cable box and DVD player. Then, as you do, I would add some great figurines on either side. I remember this fad from when I was a kid and my grandmothers neighbor had these funny and cute Staffordshire dogs flanking her fireplace. Jonathan Adler has come out with his version of these adorable creatures and now my search has ended. I wonder if this is what he had in mind when designing them as he makes them in right and left versions.

This weekend I painted my living room walls Wolf Gray by Benjamin Moore. It reminds me of the Dior gray and even has a blue tint in the evening that I'm loving. My sofa really pops now, but I will still be reupholstering it with Paul Smith's Bespoke Stripe in a light gray. Check out the Maharam virtual library for more PS creations and many, many other gorgeous fabrics.

I'm a sucker for any combo of "old meets new".  Another perfect example: the ceramics by Londoner, Michael Eden.  Now, not exactly practical to use as an urn for deceased relatives, the examples shown above would look great on a mantle or credenza.  I'm especially enamored with the chartreuse lovely which I think could be great with the IKEA sideboard I posted about yesterday.   I am planning on getting the ebony version, but IKEA makes it in bright yellow as well.  Hmmmm.  I wonder how the two bright colors would look together.  Very 80's perhaps, but I could always "bling" things down a bit with some graffiti in muted colors.

I've been looking for a great credenza for my living room. Unfortunately, due to a weird support beam/pole on my buildings second floor landing, I am limited and will probably be forced to go with something I need to build myself that comes unassembled. I found a nice IKEA credenza I think will make the final cut. That said, if I could have my dream credenza it would have EVOLUTION by Property Furniture and designed by Ferruccio Laviani. It's half modern/half baroque. Genius and perfectly suited to my design aesthetic. I haven't looked at the price tag. I mean, why torture myself with an answer to a question I already know.

Sorry I've been extremely remiss in posting lately. Lots going on in life, but I promise to get back to bringing you my fun finds more regularly. To wet your whistles, I thought I'd post about the dimmer I'm adding to my bedroom. Lutron makes the most wonderful version that definitely taps into my minimalist side named VIERTI. Plus, you can get the face plate in a variety of lustrous colors. My favorite is the brushed satin gold color. Will look especially rich against my Eggplant colored walls. At $100 it's soooo worth the expense. I believe in pampering oneself with small luxuries like this. And it's just plain sleek and sexy!!!

I'm also going to begin to post pics of my apartment in it's various stages to document the work in progress. Here's a view of my bedroom. I'm loving the dark walls and the baroque framed oil painting (a gift from Mom) that hangs over the very sleek platform bed I got from IKEA. The faux fur bedpread is newly aquired.

I recently painted my bedroom Benjamin Moore's Dark Basalt - which is a sumptuous Eggplant/Dark Brown color. I keep returning to the dream of an accent wall of some great retro inspired paper for one wall. However, now that I've set my eyes on the Skulls Wallpaper by Rockett St. George, I feel my search has ended. I love the rich dark color and the juxtoposition of something as punk as a skull with a funky 70's treatment in the flocking. At over $300 a roll, I'm sure as heck sticking to my idea of an accent wall. If/when I hit the jackpot at Lotto, I'd be more inclined to spend the dough and paper the inside of my closet as well.

One of my favorite artists, Sarah Morris, has collaborated with my favorite textile company, Maharam. The result are three wonderful patterns and the one I'm featuring would make glorious curtains for my living room. I think I will ask Santa for 9 yards as my Christmas present this year. I do believe I have been THAT good!!!

I am totally and completely in love with Stubbs & Wootton slippers. The needlepoint camo versions speak to my inner bourgeoisie and punk side all at the same time. They also conjur up ideas for a wonderfully needlepointed chair in the same camo pattern using non-traditional greys, tans, white and black. I need more free time!!!

Get your mind out of the gutter. The shag I'm talking about is this wonderful patterned shag rug by Kasthall. Completely modern, yet with an edge of retro cool enough to mix with all your groovy pieces of vintage furniture & IKEA bargains. I am loving the dark charcoal "Stig" version and think it could be the perfect replacement for my white shag...which isn't ideal in a "bachelor" environment. Yes, dark would be better!

Ok, normally I wouldn't post about lighting two posts in a row, but what the hell. I'm so digging this SOLO microphone pendant from re-Surface Design. I would love to see a grouping of them over a DJ booth or just as a fun novelty accent in a living room. Maybe even a whole row of them lined up in a hallway. Whatever, they are just plain cute!

Porta Romana, I love you!

Before you take another breath, you must first visit the site of the lighting and furniture company, Porta Romano. On second thought, take a deep breath first as the gasp you will most undoubtedly take could be enough to make you pass out. What I'm saying is that this company makes some of the most beautiful lamps I have seen in a long time. Normally, I am drawn to a sleek look when searching for the right lighting, but these lovelies are just so magically rustic, yet still very modern. A bit on the surreal side of things, they evoke just the correct amount of whimsy without being too "homemade" or quirky. Course, the company has a sense of humor that is also quite evident. One lamp has duck feet in gold peeking out below a grey shade.

I particularly enjoy the chandeliers with the bevy of shades in all different heights. GORGEOUS!!!

Raising the bar

I ran across this absolutely amazing vintage goatskin lacquered bar in the shape of a wine glass I couldn't believe my eyes. I've not seen anything so cute & camp-ish, yet done so exquisitely. Done by the master craftsman, Aldo Tura, this is just one of his fabulous designs that were frequently limited to a small number of reproductions or oftentimes, merely the prototype. Makes these beauties all the more covetous! I have been searching for the perfect tray to use as a bar in my living room, but this just blows that idea out of the water. Now, where can I get my hands on the $7k it costs to purchase it???

Penis Envy

Perhaps it's my juvenile (at times) sense of humor that has me giggling over these designs. Actually, I think they are quite chic. The Shiva Vase by Ettore Sottsass is simplistic and fun. I'd do a spray of white flowers instead of the bud shown here to take it to that next level of cheekiness. The penis chandelier by Rock and Royal is the ultimate in sex room decorating. Now, for a more conservative eroticism, perhaps the penis salt and pepper shakers by Coco de Mer is a bit more conservative. My personal favorite has to be the penis andiron by the well-endowed (talent-wise) artist and designer, Hubert le Gall. I admit there is a "woman's area" andiron counterpart, but I decided to omit it from this post. Art really does imitate life!

Animal Crackers!

It's no secret to my friends I am a complete fanatic about Thomas Paul. I've long dreamed of owning one of his rugs. His latest creations are inspired by animals. The punches of color around the outside in bold hues and done in fringe add the whimsy I've come to adore about his designs. These pillows remind me of the iconic box of animal crackers from days of old. My favorite just so happens to be the ostrich - which I think is the only animal from this set that ISN'T a cracker. Adorable just the same.

Permanent Obsession

Well, it will be a while before I save up enough money to actually get a tattoo of my very own, so in the meantime will continue to draw inspiration from the numerous cute tattooed boys in my neighborhood. (insert drool here) I'm also very inspired by the various and sundry furniture designs that also celebrate this art of embellishment. I was quite surprised actually to find the CB2 rug with a tattoo bird and heart motif - and for the price point, not a bad addition to a hip living room or bedroom. Throw a embroidered pillow on your sofa or bed - like this one from Rockett St. George - and the look is complete. Another more upscale and couture variation on the tattoo in furniture design is the remarkable and intricate coffee table by Reddish Design Studio. Lastly, the skull chair by Mama-Tried has a dark, rough and tumble vibe. The engraved leather on the cushions shows the same skill that the best tattoo artist would possess.

My friend Suzanne is having another baby boy - or as she puts it, "I'm growing another penis." So, inspired by a baby's room I came up with a forest theme that I think is befitting of a modern Manhattan child. First, no forest theme would be complete without the limited edition gold Kartell Gnome side tables by Phillipe Stark. Simple and chic modern crib that doesn't compete with the funky surroundings is best and the Oeuf "Sparrow" will do nicely! Underfoot, a gorgeous birch tree rug by Angela Adams. For dramatic effect, a wall mural a-la-1970. A grouping of wild mushrooms in table form by Thomas Wold. Retro bedding to carry the 'shroom theme thru in a wild and fun, colorful pattern. Blackout shades from Dwell Studio for The Shade Store for sleepytime finish off the look.

Hello Dali

Salvador Dali has always been one of my most favorite and admired artists of all time. Not to mention the fact that he was good pals with my all-time favorite designer Coco Chanel makes him that much more alluring in my opinion. He was quite a looker too, I might add - well, before he got all crazy with his mustache and started to wear really funky outfits. I'm speaking of the YOUNG Dali. Hubba, hubba. But, I digress. Dali's furniture designs - which can be found at Karkula are true to the spirit of his paintings, while remaining beatiful and functional. Here are a few of my favorites and I dream (a surreal dream, of course) of the lamp in the corner of my living room. I'm not sure why I've been so drawn to gold of late. Perhaps there's a connection hidden in this posting? I may have to take a trip down to Florida and visit the "Dali, Freud and Surrealism" exhibit on now thru November 8th to gain more insight into my design psyche.

Perhaps it's the 80's revival that is happening around me that has made me think so much of my own childhood. One of those icons that stands out in my mind was the infamous Delorean. Now, not only was this car super spacey and cool, was featured in the movie "Back to the Future", but for a young gay addicted to Dynasty and everything dramatic, the scandal surrounding John Delorean was just too delicious. I still love this car for it's trashy appeal - especially the 24carat gold one. Course, I think I'd throw some over-the-top Versace pillows in the back seat for added camp. It may even call for a bit of gold jewelry for the lucky driver of this fine automobile. Hmmm, a trashy necklace ala Sex in the City? YES! I couldn't help but wonder, could I enter this as my own personal float in this year's Pride Parade???

Laduree in Paris is one of THE chicest places one can visit. Not only for the delicious macaroons and other delights, but the interior design as well. I must say that the packaging leaves me speechless and wanting to start hoarding boxes again (I had a "small" obsession with boxes a few years back). However, I will limit myself to admiring them from afar via the www. Check out some of these wondrous little gems.

The Rain In Spain

I am always searching for simple and chic ways to add glamor to otherwise utilitarian areas of the home. The doormat is one of those often neglected items. Or, it often becomes a victim to gimmicky sayings and often-tacky designs. So, when I was approached by CSN Rugs for a giveaway and I saw the Chilewich door mat (18" W x 28" D) in bold black and white it conjured up images of Eliza Doolittle in the scene at the horse races where all the a ladies wore those gigantic hats. Eliza’s striped beauty was stunning in it’s simplicity, as is this wonderful doormat. My landlord has finally completed our lovely backyard. I can't wait to have a barbecue. The excitement of having an outdoor space to enjoy all summer has me daydreaming about these gorgeous benches by designer Matthias Pliessnig. They are more sculpture than furniture and would look so modern placed around on the grass. Ah, to lounge perchance to dream!

3 Hour Tour

Warm weather is finally upon us. I've been wanting to take another trip around Manhattan on the boat by the same name. The cheap champagne is not the draw nor is the interior of the vessel. I'm always re-doing interior spaces in my head and now I have the blog to help bring these visions to life. I would have to start by switching out the green cusions with something a bit more reminiscent of the sea. The wave inspired fabric by HBF Textiles would go a long way to update the look. I would replace the pillows with some super cute Thomas Paul beauties that look like something right out of Treasure Island. Underfoot I'd add a few Jonathan Adler anchor rugs. And strewn about the tables, some Moby Dick decoupage trays by John Derian and sea urchin bowls by Jayson Home. I think I'd probably have to stop there, but not before adding on either side of the cabin some vintage and nautical inspired sconces I found on 1stdibs.

Since moving to Williamsburg I've been inundated with the urban, hipster culture I'm growing quite fond of and one of the best inspirations has been the ever abundant graffiti art adorning various buildings.  This sent me hunting thru my internet files for all the graffiti inspired furniture and accessories I've come across recently.   Here are some of my favorite finds.    I'm even thinking of starting a Gay gang and coming up with my own forms of tagging.

Home furnishings, that is. Bev Hisey has a new collection of round "petri dish" rugs that are patterned after magnified bacteria. My favorties are the E.Coli, Botulism (great for a kitchen) and Influenza (shown) designs. Even with these alarming names, they are hard to resist. No flu masks required.

As a continuation of yesterday's theme and my misery at work, today's posting is all about BOOBS - as in the "boobs" I work for. Besides, I felt the brand new Lady pillows from Jonathan Adler were just too fun to resist posting about. I'd be very happy to see one on my own little settee in my living room, but I believe they would look quite at home on the pink furry Cipria sofa from Edra. Maybe I'll send my ideas off to the Bunny Ranch in Reno.
